ECUs determine the quantity of fuel, ignition timing and other parameters by monitoring the engine through sensors. These can include MAP sensor, throttle position sensor, air temperature sensor, oxygen sensor and many others. Often this monitoring and control is done using a control loop (such as a PID controller).

The simplest ECUs control only the quantity of fuel injected into each cylinder each engine cycle.

More advanced ECUs found on most modern cars also control the ignition timing, variable valve timing (VVT), the level of boost maintained by the turbocharger (in turbocharged cars), and other peripherals.

Hybrid digital designs:

A hybrid digital design was popular in the mid 1980s. These used analogue techniques to measure and process input parameters from the engine, and then used a look-up table stored in a digital ROM chip to yield pre-computed output values. Later systems compute these outputs dynamically. The ROM type of system is amenable to tuning if one knows the system well.

Modern ECUs:

Modern ECUs use a microprocessor which can process the inputs from the engine sensors in real time. An electronic control unit contains the hardware and software (firmware). The hardware consists of electronic components on a printed circuit board (PCB), ceramic substrate or a thin laminate substrate. The main component on this circuit board is a microcontroller chip (CPU). The software is stored in the microcontroller or other chips on the PCB, typically in EPROMs or flash memory so the CPU can be re-programmed by uploading updated code or replacing chips. This is also referred to as an (electronic) Engine Management System (EMS).

Sophisticated engine management systems receive inputs from other sources, and control other parts of the engine; for instance, some variable valve timing systems are electronically controlled, and turbocharger waste gates can also be managed. They also may communicate with transmission control units or directly interface electronically-controlled automatic transmissions, traction control systems, and the like. The Controller Area Network or CAN bus automotive network is often used to achieve communication between these devices.

Modern ECUs sometimes include features as cruise control, transmission control, anti-skid brake control, and anti-theft control, etc.

Map stands for “More Aggressive settings“, provides large gains in torque and horsepower while maintaining a high degree of safety.

The AccessPORT reprograms the tuning parameters inside the factory Engine Control Unit (ECU) using map files, which contain specially written instructions for the AccessPORT to follow during the reprogramming process. A map file can contain information for any number of different modifications or enhancements to a vehicle, ranging from a race map for a heavily modified vehicle to an economy map for a stock vehicle. Through the use of the AccessPORT and different map files the ECU can be reprogrammed to accommodate virtually any vehicle configuration.

COBB Tuning provides several preloaded maps for common power modifications. These maps are known as Base Maps. Each base map is dyno developed and rigorously tested in multiple COBB Tuning facilities across the country these tests cover the spectrum of altitude, temperature, humidity, octane and fuel quality variables to ensure proper calibration and performance wherever the car is driven.

Since all base maps and custom tune maps are stored in the AccessPORT, you can change maps any time you want. Switch to a race gas map for that extra performance at the track. Go to the Fuel Economy map for those long boring drives. Load the Valet map to keep revs below 3,200 when you drop your car off with the parking attendant. The Anti-Theft map does not allow the car to start, keeping it safe in suspect areas or during extended parking.

Would you like piece of mind knowing your vehicle’s computer (ECU) is protected against accidental damage. Are you ready to spend less time fumbling with a laptop and more time driving?” – Cobb tuning, Inc introduced officially their new car tuning product COBB AccessPORT on August 19th 2008.

The AccessPORT is ultimate personal tuning solution for your vehicle. Reprogram your vehicle’s computer (ECU) by selecting one of the pre-installed performance “more aggressive settings” (called maps) that automatically optimize settings such as the air/fuel ratio, ignition timing, boost and more for performance results you can instantly feel!

Features:

Improve horsepower, torque, and fuel economy at the touch of a button.

Display vehicle data such as boost, RPM, temperatures and more while you drive.

Easy installation, no mechanical or computer skills necessary.

Connects to your vehicle via the OBD-II (on-board diagnostic port) port conveniently located under your dash.

Easy-to-read color display.

Update over the Internet to stay up-to-date with the latest features.

Not a “piggyback”. Once vehicle’s computer has been programmed by the AccessPORT, it can be removed and the settings will stay on your computer.

Not just an “ECU reflash” – AccessPORT features enhancements such as on-the-fly mode switching, data monitors, reading DTCs, performance monitors, boost cuts, boost reduction for speed and gears, fuel cuts, RPM limits, throttle body behavior, corrections, in addition to the normal functions like fueling, timing, and boost.

The AccessPORT downloads the actual map that was on it. If you are taking your car to the dealership and suspect that they will attempt to update your mapping, then you will have to unmarry it, take it in and have them flash it, then remarry your AccessPORT. This will allow your stock map loaded on your AccessPORT to be the latest factory revision.

Once the AccessPORT is married to the car only the AccessPORT can flash it. To allow the dealer to flash your car as normal you will have to unmarry the AccessPORT from your car.

The ODB II (on-board diagnostic port) dataloging is not locked. Any device that reads the OBD II data can still function properly.

Maps made by AccessTUNER Pro facilities can be shared, however the mapping can only be viewed by that AccessTUNER, not the end user nor another AccessTUNER.

Pre-calibrated to maximize performance of stock or modified vehicles.

Can be custom tailored to your vehicle by our extensive network of professional tuners
